NEWS OF THE MONTH FROM THE TARRYTOWN ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY COUNCIL

MAY 2019
WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT
_____________________

Cowspiracy. Earth Day planning activities. Climate change, and lots more. Our monthly meeting is this week -- Thursday at 7:00 -- and we continue to draw more volunteers from Tarrytown. We'll be discussing our events schedule, a river clean-up, a new community garden, and more!

FILM SERIES
"COWSPIRACY", TONIGHT!

Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Committee is super-stoked to present the second in our film series at the Warner Library -- TONIGHT! -- and we hope turnout will match last month's.

Here's what Earth.com has to say about the film, Cowspiracy:

"Ignore the punny title if you can. Cowspiracy offers a powerful and provocative indictment of animal agriculture as the number one global cause of carbon emissions into the atmosphere. The film’s producer/director team of Kip Andersen (who’s also the documentary’s narrator) and Keegan Kuhn states that 51 percent of carbon emissions can be blamed on livestock, particularly cattle. That’s more than the CO2 emissions of oil and gas."

Catch Cowspiracy on the 3rd Floor of the Warner Library, tonight (Tuesday, February 4). The movie starts at 7, and will be followed by a discussion. We'll have snacks (meatless!) and beverages, too. It's free, and open to all.

CURBSIDE RECYCLING GRANT IS THROUGH!
_________________________________

The grant for curbside recycling pickup is essentially through; Greenburgh is in the final stages of reviewing the contract and waiting to receive the final signed version from the DEC. Communication to residents about the program is still late 2020, early 2021 for launch of the pilot. We can't wait for this to happen.
LOOKING AHEAD TO...
EARTH DAY 2020

Get ready to pitch in this year. Earth celebrates her 50th Earth Day, and we'll be working with you to spruce up the streets, prepare community garden beds, plant a bunch of trees, give away our custom-designed Earth Day cotton totes, and so much more!

The clean-ups are part of Westchester County's "Big Clean", and to make it a huge success, we're looking for organizers for street and block projects. Our planning meetings are already underway, and are a lot of fun -- we even cook!

If you're interested in pitching in on the front end of Tarrytown's biggest environmental day of the year, get in touch with us at info@tarrytownenvironmental.com or come to our next general TEAC meeting. (Pro tip: It's this Thursday, February 6 at 7:00 in Village Hall.)

CLIMATE CRISIS
TEAC'S STATEMENT ON NATIONAL ENVIROMENTAL POLICY ACT
_________________________________

"The Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Council strongly condemns plans by the U.S. Administration to weaken the 50-year-old National Environmental Policy Act. The proposed extensive changes would remove the requirements for Federal agencies to consider the long-term effects on climate change when evaluating new infrastructure, such as pipelines and other fossil-fuel-related projects. It would also narrow the range of projects that require environmental review. In this time of universally-understood climate crisis, governments must enact more, not fewer, controls on greenhouse-gas emissions, and must fully evaluate infrastructure projects in light of that mandate.”

OUT THERE
LANDFILL ON THE MOON?
________________________

A curious tag-line on an email ("Think Big. Pollute the Moon.") got us to thinking about interstellar pollution.

While this was made tongue-in-cheek, our co-chair, Dean Gallea, took up the issue with some well-placed skepticism.

"Interestingly, there have been proposals to use the moon as a landfill for the Earth. There are MANY problems with that:
  1. It would cost hundreds of times the value of the original discarded items;
  2. It would forever make it impossible to recover resources from trash;
  3. It would alter the orbit of the moon, changing the natural circadian cycles;
  4. Making the moon heavier could potentially make it fly off into space, and then the earth might crash into the sun!"
OOPS!

AND FINALLY:
DO WE REALLY NEED INDIVIDUALLY-WRAPPED PRUNES?
________________________

Probably not.

Sunsweet has released a new product line, and we'd like to state for the record: Why? Do we need individually-plastic-wrapped prunes? And why does a supermarket in Tarrytown feel compelled to carry these, when prunes, by themselves, offer their own earth-friendly solution to exterior wrapping (skin)?

They're called "Ones".

"Wrapped in Plastic" was a catchphrase for a Twin-Peaks watching generation. It takes on a whole different meaning in the supermarket. If you see something in the stores that's wrapped in unnecessary or excessive plastic and packaging, send it to us, and we'll put it in the newsletter. Thanks! (info@tarrytownenvironmental.com)
